Week Ahead in Washington: September 14

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – It’s a busy week in Washington as Congress holds key hearings and President Donald Trump travels abroad.

Trump is set to leave Tuesday for the United Kingdom. His trip comes as the two nations look to work on a trade deal. It also follows last week’s Russian drone incursion on Poland – a NATO ally.

Back in Washington, all eyes Wednesday will be on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which is set to hear from former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez. She was fired Aug. 27 after a fallout with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Her lawyer said she was fired after refusing “to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts.”

Also Wednesday, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors will be meeting. Board Chair Jerome Powell hinted at potential interest rate cuts last month, something Trump has been demanding.

It’s also the first meeting since Trump tried firing board member Lisa Cook Aug 25. The president, who needs cause to fire a Federal Reserve Governor, claims allegations Cook committed mortgage fraud are cause for her termination. Cook sued and a federal judge ruled she can stay on the board while the case remains on going. The Trump administration is asking a federal appeals court to remove Cook ahead of Wednesday’s meeting. Cook has since provided documents showing she claimed her second property as a ‘vacation home,’ which could contradict the Trump administration’s mortgage fraud claims.

Trump is also planning on going to Arizona Friday to attend the funeral of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Wednesday in Orem, Utah.
