GOOD NEWS! LPSS Summer Meal Programs Return

Plate Of Food

The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Child Nutrition Department is pleased to announce its 2026 Summer Feeding Program, which will provide free nutritious meals to children throughout the community while school is out of session. Through a combination of onsite meal service and non-congregate meal box distribution, LPSS is working to ensure children continue receiving healthy meals during the summer months.

All children 18 years of age and younger are eligible to receive meals at participating sites at no cost, regardless of income or school enrollment status.

SUMMER MEAL BOXES

LPSS will once again offer its Non-Congregate Summer Meal Box Distribution program to help improve meal access for families who may face transportation or distance barriers to traditional feeding sites. Under USDA guidelines, non-congregate meal service is permitted only in approved rural areas identified through federal eligibility maps and guidance established by the USDA and the Louisiana Department of Education.

The meal boxes contain shelf-stable breakfast and lunch items for seven days and allow families to pick up meals and take them home rather than requiring children to eat onsite.

Meal boxes will be distributed each Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., June 3 through July 8, at:

Charles Burke Elementary

Duson Elementary

Families only need to register once. Registration will remain open while supplies are available and may reopen weekly as needed.

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM

In addition to the meal box program, LPSS cafeterias at participating summer feeding sites will provide onsite breakfast and lunch service throughout the summer. Meals served through the onsite Summer Food Service Program must be consumed at the feeding location in accordance with USDA guidelines. Children participating in the onsite feeding program may not also participate in the non-congregate meal box program during the same week.

A full list of participating meal sites and the dates they will be serving is listed below.

“We are excited to continue serving our students and community through these important summer nutrition programs,” said LPSS Director of Child Nutrition Catherine Cassidy. “Providing access to healthy meals during the summer helps children stay nourished, active, and ready to return to school healthy and prepared to learn.”
