Transfer deadline day is seen by many as clubs scrambling around at the last minute in an attempt to plug gaps in their squads they really should have filled earlier, all the while paying over the odds for players they might have got for a better price on any other day of the year.
Occasionally, though, there are bargains to be had, and even some big-money gambles can pay off handsomely. That was mainly the case with these high-profile Premier League signings, all of which were confirmed on the final day of the summer transfer window over the years.
Claude Makélélé, Real Madrid to Chelsea, 2003
Makélélé was an unsung hero in a Real Madrid team that won seven trophies between 2000 and 2003, including two LaLiga titles and the 2002 Champions League. Florentino Pérez criticized the Frenchman’s ability after his departure to Chelsea, but his Madrid teammates, most notably Zinedine Zidane, were stunned the club decided to let him go in order to sign another ‘Galáctico,’ David Beckham.
“Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?” Zidane famously said.
Madrid’s loss was Chelsea’s gain. The Spanish giants didn’t win a league title for three years after Makélélé left, while they had to wait 12 years for their next Champions League victory. The Blues, on the other hand, became English champions for the first time in 50 years in 2005 and won back-to-back Premier League titles with Makélélé at the base of the midfield.

Wayne Rooney, Everton to Manchester United, 2004
The following summer, the most hyped teenager in the history of English soccer got his big move to Manchester United at the age of just 18, by which time he had already starred at the 2004 European Championship for England.
Rooney memorably scored a hat trick on his debut against Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, instantly making himself an Old Trafford hero.
In 13 seasons with the Red Devils, he scored 253 goals in 559 games, became the club’s all-time record goalscorer and won 16 trophies along the way, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.
Ashley Cole, Arsenal to Chelsea, 2006
Cole completed a highly controversial move from boyhood club Arsenal to London rivals Chelsea in 2006, having been unhappy with how the Gunners had treated him during discussions over a new contract.
During his seven seasons at Highbury, Cole had established himself as one of the world’s very best left backs, which he continued to prove during his time at Chelsea.
Although he won just one Premier League title in eight seasons at Stamford Bridge, having lifted the trophy twice with Arsenal, he tasted European success with the Blues, winning the Champions League in 2012 and the Europa League the following season.
Mesut Özil, Real Madrid to Arsenal, 2013
Arsenal hit the headlines in 2013 by convincing Mesut Özil to join them from Real Madrid. The German had just been crowned LaLiga’s assist leader for a third straight season, making him quite the coup for the Gunners, who were in the midst of a nine-year Premier League title drought. Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly furious about Özil’s departure.
Although the playmaker had his moments in the Premier League, finishing as the league’s top assister in 2015-16, and won three FA Cups, he ultimately failed to hit the heights expected of him and his time in London fizzled out. Özil didn’t make a single appearance for the club in the first half of the 2020-21 season, and his contract was terminated six months early.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus to Manchester United, 2021
United brought Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford in a bombshell signing on deadline day in 2021, although things didn’t quite work out as had been hoped.
During his first spell at the club between 2003 and 2009, the Portuguese had undergone a stunning transformation from scrawny stepover merchant to the most lethal forward in world soccer, culminating in him winning the Ballon d’Or in 2008, the year he won his first Champions League.
Ronaldo had inspired United to nine trophies in those first six years, but none followed in his second spell, which was cut short after a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag, who had dropped him from the team.
The former Real Madrid star had been signed by former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, one of ten Hag’s predecessors, who briefly appeared to have United back on track after years of underperforming. Although Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 games in his first season back, his arrival appeared to unsettle the rest of the team and disrupt what Solskjaer had been building, with the Norwegian sacked less than three months after the Portugal captain’s return.
Cole Palmer, Manchester City to Chelsea, 2023
Of the current crop of Premier League players, Cole Palmer is the one who stands out as the deadline-day signing who has made the biggest impact.
The attacker had shown glimpses of promise in fleeting appearances with Manchester City, who surprisingly sold him to Chelsea. Pep Guardiola revealed Palmer had asked to leave for two years due to a lack of first-team opportunities and admitted he hadn’t given the youngster the playing time he deserved.
The same certainly couldn’t be said at Stamford Bridge, where he immediately excelled, scoring 25 goals in 45 games in his debut season.
Palmer’s numbers have been slightly less impressive since then, and he was left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad after a difficult 2025-26 season. However, the Premier League knows what he is capable of, and the 24-year-old has made a fast start to the new season, scoring in each of his two opening games of the campaign.
