The transfer deadline deals that could still get done: Fernandez, Balogun, Mudryk and more – Charm

After a long summer of transfer comings and goings, we have reached the final day of the window. Clubs will have until 11pm BST to complete any remaining deals.

With Arsenal searching for a forward, the Enzo Fernandez situation still unresolved and Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City very much having unfinished transfer business to complete, we look at the deals that could still get done today.

This list is informed by The Athletic’s newsroom — including David Ornstein — and their reporting in the last days of the window.

Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and Arsenal’s front line

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. As The Athletic reported on Sunday, the two clubs are close to finalising a €70million (£60m; $81m) transfer agreement. Al Hilal want to sign him to a four-year contract. Personal terms had not yet been agreed on Sunday, but there is no expectation that these will be an issue.

This will be Arsenal’s record sale — the previous was in 2017, when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool for £35m. The entire fee is guaranteed and does not include add-ons.

Over the weekend, The Athletic reported that Barcelona are closing in on the signing of Gabriel Jesus, potentially leaving Arsenal short on attacking players. They are weighing up a move to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon. The Athletic reported he would be a market opportunity after Lyon missed out on qualification for the league phase of this season’s Champions League.

Arsenal are also interested in Julian Alvarez. He wants to leave Atletico Madrid, but he prefers a move to Barcelona, who Atletico will not sell him to. Borussia Dortmund have made an approach to sign Ethan Nwaneri on loan. The 19-year-old is yet to make an appearance this season.

Folarin Balogun

The United States striker could be returning to the Premier League after Monaco agreed a deal in the region of £40million with Everton. Personal terms are being finalised.

Balogun scored three times in four appearances at this summer’s World Cup, but controversy surrounded him when a red card he received was suspended after U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Balogun came through Arsenal’s academy and made two Premier League appearances. Arsenal included a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that took him to Monaco in 2023.

Enzo Fernandez

After Chelsea beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-3 on Sunday, head coach Xabi Alonso said they were still “preparing for all scenarios” when it came to Fernandez’s future.

Manchester City are the suitors. Chelsea imposed a deadline for a £120m offer just over a week ago. But that came and went without an offer from City.

Yet Alonso’s comments speak to the fact that Fernandez could still move on before Tuesday’s deadline. The Athletic reported on Monday that City are now fully focused on signing Fernandez after pulling out of a move for Cody Gakpo.

Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Grealish, Richarlison, Manchester City, Spurs and Everton

Manchester City are in pole position to complete the signing of Ndiaye.

The Athletic reported on Sunday that Tottenham Hotspur had reached an agreement in principle to sign Ndiaye from Everton, while Everton had also reached an equivalent agreement for Richarlison.

However, City have now forged ahead after agreeing a package worth £65million for the 26-year-old. Ndiaye is expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday morning. Richarlison’s move back to former club Everton has also stalled.

Everton have agreed a deal for Jack Grealish to return on a season-long loan, and are on track to sign Kenny Tete from Fulham for £9m.

Tottenham could yet move on Kevin Danso. They have also agreed a deal to sign Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea. Personal terms have been agreed and the 28-year-old defender has been granted permission to undergo a medical.

Ibrahim Mbaye

Aston Villa have a deal lined up to sign the 18-year-old forward from Paris Saint-Germain.

Late last week, the two clubs agreed a fee worth €55million for Mbaye. The Athletic reported that the relationship between Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was seen as key to closing the deal.

Liverpool were also interested in Mbaye, but he will be joining Villa before the deadline. He was in attendance at Villa Park on Monday night during the game against Arsenal.

Cody Gakpo, Lucca Brughmans

Gakpo seems set to stay at Liverpool after Manchester City had an £80million bid turned down.

The Athletic reported on Monday that all parties have now been in direct communication to confirm the deal is off after City’s bid of an initial £75m and £5m in add-ons was rejected. City’s focus is now on signing Fernandez from Chelsea.

Liverpool are also advancing in a deal to sign goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Belgian side Genk, with an agreement nearing on a deal worth a fixed fee of around £28m, plus another £2m in add-ons.

The intention is for the 18-year-old to return to Genk on loan for the 2026-27 season, but this is dependent on whether or not Liverpool No 2 Giorgi Mamardashvili stays beyond the deadline.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Chelsea’s other plans

After 18 months on the sidelines because of a positive result in a doping test, Mykhailo Mudryk is available to play and is attracting interest from elsewhere in the Premier League.

Tottenham have made an enquiry and a loan deal has been agreed, with player terms still to be finalised. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi worked with the winger at Shakhtar Donetsk. Chelsea rejected Leeds’ loan offer for Mudryk earlier this month, but they are still interested in him.

Chelsea have also reached a verbal agreement with Como to loan goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to the Serie A club for a season.
