HONG KONG — In a pioneering operation targeting dangerous driving, Hong Kong police arrested 10 drivers from August 3 to 10, using drones for aerial surveillance and evidence collection for the first time.
The operation, focused on the Kwun Tong Bypass, was conducted by the Traffic Enforcement and Control Division of the Eastern Kowloon Regional Traffic Unit.
Among those arrested were nine men and one woman, aged 25 to 51. Seven private cars and three motorcycles were seized for further inspection.
Senior Inspector Poon Chun-ho of the unit said the Kwun Tong Bypass is a major highway where routine patrols are regularly conducted.
To enhance enforcement efficiency, the operation deployed drones together with undercover police vehicles.
Poon noted that some of the arrested drivers were observed weaving at extreme speeds, creating a hazardous environment on the highway.
He said the drones provided advantages in flexibility and wide coverage, supporting aerial observation and command.
“In addition to empowering our jurisdiction, our deployment of drones in this operation helped conserve significant manpower,” said Poon.

When conditions were deemed appropriate and safe, undercover vehicles — pre-positioned at strategic locations — were dispatched to follow target vehicles for evidence collection and enforcement. Support vehicles were also deployed flexibly to ensure the safe completion of arrests.
Poon denounced dangerous driving as “extremely irresponsible.” “This kind of motorist overestimates their driving abilities and underestimates unexpected traffic situations. If an accident happens, their actions pose a life-threatening danger to themselves and other innocent road users.”
