James Gunn has taken to social media to reveal when The People v. Gorilla Grodd takes place in the DCU. The upcoming true-crime mockumentary series stars Skyler Gisondo reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen, who is joined by Jimmy Tatro as Grodd. Gisondo had previously that the series would take place between Superman and Man of Tomorrow.
In a new post replying to that report, Gunn confirmed that The People v. Gorilla Grodd takes place after the events of Man of Tomorrow. “I mean it’s a true crime series so it jumps all over the place. But overall in continuity it’s after MoT,” the DC Studios co-CEO said. The filmmaker also confirmed, by extension, that the series won’t be released before the Superman sequel.
What we know about The People v. Gorilla Grodd so far
The People v. Gorilla Grodd will mark another tonal shift for the DC Universe. The eight-episode series follows Jimmy Olsen as he reopens a case to investigate whether the superpowered ape, Grodd, was wrongly convicted of killing his father years prior. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault of American Vandal fame are serving as showrunners on the upcoming project.
Recently revealed set photos and videos have shown a performer portraying Grodd in a practical suit. More puzzlingly, they have also shown Grodd performing an acapella number. It will mark the fourth TV show set in the DCU, while being the first new project that wasn’t announced by DC Studios in its initial slate for the franchise.
Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce will reprise their roles from Superman. They are joined by Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, and Tim Baltz.
While a release date hasn’t been announced, Gunn’s comments confirmed that The People v. Gorilla Grodd will be released sometime after Man of Tomorrow, which releases on July 9, 2027. Gisondo will reprise the role in the Superman sequel as well.
