The Italian Job 2 has received a promising update with a celebrated filmmaker on board. According to a new report, The Housemaid director Paul Feig has been courted by Paramount Pictures to helm the highly anticipated sequel.
Deadline has reported that the studio is actively finding writers for the film. Feig is said to be in early talks, so no deals have been signed yet. Last year, Feig’s The Housemaid was a major box office success, spawning a sequel that is currently also being directed by the filmmaker. Feig’s previous films include A Simple Favor, Bridesmaids, Jackpot!, and more.
Revisiting the cast, legacy & appeal of The Italian Job
A sequel to The Italian Job has been in the works for over two decades. The first film, released in 2003, grossed over $176 million at the box office and was critically acclaimed. The film starred Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Donald Sutherland, and more. The film revived the genre of heist films by adding its own twists to it. The film itself was a reimagining of the eponymous 1969 film by Troy Kennedy Martin. The franchise also spawned a tie-in video game, along with an official remake in India in 2012 titled Players.
At one point, its sequel was going to be titled The Brazilian Job; however, that version never materialized. It was then revived over the years, with multiple drafts that never went into production.
At the time of writing, it’s unclear whether any of the film’s original cast will reprise their roles in the sequel. Feig is no stranger to sequels or established franchises, given his previous works. He also worked with Jason Statham in the 2015 action-comedy Spy.
The Italian Job 2 currently does not have a release date.
