Pixar’s latest film could prove to be Supergirl‘s kryptonite at the box office. With the superhero movie hitting theaters this week, early tracking suggests it could face stiff competition from day one.
Toy Story 5 to beat Supergirl’s opening box office in its second weekend
Based on presales estimates, DC’s new film Supergirl is projected to open at around $45-$50 million at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, the international estimates are reportedly much lower, likely below $40 million. This puts the worldwide opening expectation in the $80-$90 million range, according to Deadline.
While these numbers seem better than recent DCEU movies, they are still far behind DCU’s Superman, which opened to $125 million domestically and $220 million globally in 2025.
On the other hand, Toy Story 5, released a week ago on June 19, continues to dominate the box office. After opening to $159.6 million domestically, the biggest US opening of 2026 so far, the Pixar sequel had already crossed $200 million in North America by Tuesday. On Monday, it reportedly made $17.3 million and an additional $23.7 million the following day.
According to Box Office Mojo, Toy Story 5 has earned over $352 million worldwide until now. The film is expected to continue its strong box-office run, earning another $88-$96 million in its second week.
Additionally, Paramount’s Jackass: Best and Last will also debut in theaters this week. The comedy sequel is expected to make about $10 million in North America and roughly $3 million overseas.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic book mini-series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Ana Nogueira served as the screenwriter while James Gunn and Peter Safran produced it. It reportedly had a $170 million budget with Warner Bros. Pictures handling the distribution.
The film features House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as the titular superhero alongside Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, and David Corenswet as Superman.
