Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) sat down with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of a U.S.-Canada Summit hosted by Eurasia Group and Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto earlier this month, Politico reported Thursday.
Shapiro said Carney’s office reached out to him and offered the meeting.
“I thought it was supposed to be a five- to 10-minute quick hello. We ended up meeting for 30 or 40 minutes, and had a really good in-depth conversation. I’m an admirer of his leadership,” Shapiro told Politico.

A Carney spokesperson described the sit-down as a “brief introductory meeting” while Carney was in town for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Pennsylvania and Ontario.
“The Prime Minister has engaged with both Democrats and Republicans over the course of his mandate,” the spokesperson told Politico.
Shapiro is not the only rumored 2028 Democratic presidential contender to have met Carney. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) also met the leader last month.
