A super typhoon named after Hong Kong’s Chinese white dolphins is set to bring very hot weather to the city in the latter part of next week, according to the Observatory.
Super Typhoon Dolphin, currently over the western North Pacific, is expected to move towards the waters south of Japan in the next few days, although its subsequent trajectory remains uncertain, the forecaster’s senior scientific officer Kong Yu-chau told the South China Morning Post on Friday.
“We expect it will have a higher chance of moving towards the vicinity of the East China Sea,” he said.
“Under the influence of the Dolphin’s outer subsiding airstream, the weather will be very hot over the coast of southeastern China in the latter part of next week.”
Kong said it was too early to tell whether Dolphin would lead to rainstorms in the city, given the uncertainty of the super typhoon’s future movement.
The Observatory said in its blog on Wednesday that some AI forecast models predicted that Dolphin could intensify further, with its winds potentially reaching historic extremes.
But it also stressed that such predictions were subject to limitations and actual circumstances.
