Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has issued a red rainstorm warning as the city is being hit by widespread heavy showers.
The signal was raised at 9.36am on Thursday, replacing an amber rainstorm warning that was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 8.35am.
“Widespread heavy rain may affect Hong Kong in a couple of hours. Members of the public should be on the alert,” the forecaster said.
A red rainstorm warning in Hong Kong means that heavy rain exceeding 50 millimetres per hour is either happening or expected to happen.
According to the Observatory’s forecast, the remnant of Tropical Cyclone Danas will move southwest across eastern Guangdong and might skirt near Guangzhou.
“The active southwest monsoon to its south will generally affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary [Thursday] and [Friday]. There will be torrential rain and squally thunderstorms over the area,” it said.
