‘Hungry Hippo’ Begins Flight-Like Testing Ahead Of Neutron Debut

Shares of Rocket Lab (RKLB) are tracking their best monthly performance since May as the company announced a key pre-flight testing milestone for Neutron’s world-first reusable Hungry Hippo fairing.

RKLB stock fell 1% on Friday, marking its fourth consecutive session of losses, but shares are still up 12% for the month.

Rocket Lab’s Hungry Hippo Begins Pre-Flight Testing 

Rocket Lab is now testing whether Hungry Hippo can open and close as intended during a mission. The exercise recreates the fairing’s role in releasing Neutron’s second stage and payload before the reusable first stage heads back to Earth. A fairing is a protective shell that shields a rocket’s payload from heat and aerodynamic forces during launch. 

“Pre-flight testing with Hungry Hippo is underway,” the company said on X. Hungry Hippo differs from traditional rocket fairings, which are typically discarded or recovered separately. Its two halves stay connected to Neutron’s first stage, opening for about 1.5 seconds before closing to create a single integrated vehicle for the return journey. 

Once the current campaign concludes, the fairing will be placed back in its hangar until Neutron’s interstage arrives in Virginia for mating.

Rocket Lab’s Neutron Fairing Clears Key Tests

The latest update comes after a qualification and acceptance campaign completed in December. Rocket Lab subjected Hungry Hippo to 275,000 pounds of force to reproduce peak aerodynamic pressure, while testing its control-surface hubs beyond 125% of projected flight loads.

The fairing reached Wallops Island, Virginia, in January, where it underwent inspections and received key flight hardware. Earlier this month, Rocket Lab confirmed that thermal protection, control surfaces, avionics and fluid systems had been installed before the vehicle moved outdoors for further checks.

CEO Peter Beck said completing those tests would leave Hungry Hippo “essentially finished and ready for launch.” The next steps include joining the fairing with Neutron’s interstage, assembling the broader vehicle and conducting integrated checks, static-fire testing and a wet dress rehearsal.
