As more Malaysians look beyond traditional short-haul destinations, Hong Kong is emerging as a city that blends its signature urban energy with a steadily expanding halal-friendly travel ecosystem, making it easier for Muslim travellers to explore with comfort and confidence.
According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Muslim-friendly facilities have grown significantly in recent years as Hong Kong now offers close to 290 Muslim-friendly establishments, including 222 halal-certified and Muslim-owned eateries, alongside 61 Crescent Rated hotels, giving travellers more flexibility when it comes to dining, accommodation and daily travel planning.
“For visitors, this shift is most noticeable in everyday travel experiences. Halal Cantonese dishes sit alongside international dining options, while prayer facilities are increasingly available at major attractions and transport hubs, helping Muslim travellers move through the city with greater ease,” HKTB said.
The board highlighted that the result is a destination that feels more accessible without losing its distinctive character to ensure travellers can still take in sweeping skyline views from Victoria Peak, explore lively shopping districts or enjoy waterfront leisure spaces, while having more practical support for their faith-based needs throughout the journey.
“Family-friendly attractions such as Ocean Park Hong Kong also form part of this evolving landscape, offering inclusive experiences where Muslim travellers can spend the day comfortably, supported by improved visitor facilities,” it said.
A key driver behind this growing visibility in Southeast Asia is the board’s “Jelajah Hong Kong” initiative as the campaign focuses on practical travel guidance, including halal dining options, prayer locations, accommodation listings and curated itineraries designed for Muslim travellers from markets such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
For Malaysian visitors in particular, the appeal is becoming more tangible. Recent travel trends show rising interest in Hong Kong as a short-haul city break destination, supported by improved access to halal-friendly services and clearer travel information.
“Today, planning a trip to Hong Kong no longer requires extensive workarounds for Muslim travellers. From halal-certified meals and accessible prayer spaces to a growing number of Muslim-friendly hotels and attractions, the city is gradually shaping itself into a destination that supports both convenience and cultural needs,” HKTB emphasised.
As this ecosystem continues to expand, HKTB noted that Hong Kong is positioning itself as a modern city break option where Muslim travellers can enjoy a seamless blend of urban exploration, family experiences and lifestyle travel without compromising on comfort or familiarity.
