Hong Kong’s weather forecaster will keep the No 1 typhoon warning signal in force until Wednesday morning, with alerts likely extending further into the week.
The Observatory said on Tuesday afternoon that the signal would remain in force for the rest of today and Wednesday morning, but the chance of issuing a No 3 strong wind signal was low.
“There are rather large uncertainties in its subsequent movement and intensity. The tropical cyclone warning signal may remain in force until later this week,” the forecaster said.
Tropical Depression Saudel is expected to skirt within about 200km (124 miles) southeast of Hong Kong later on Tuesday afternoon, edging closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong in the evening and Wednesday morning.
“With Saudel edging closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong and intensifying gradually from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday, local winds are expected to strengthen progressively,” the forecaster said.
“Unless Saudel intensifies significantly and its associated strong winds are closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, the chance of strong winds generally over Hong Kong is not high.”
