Heavy thundery showers are expected in Hong Kong on Friday and will continue until Monday, according to the city’s weather forecaster, which escalated the rainstorm warning to red in the morning.
The Observatory raised the amber rainstorm warning to red at 11.05am on Friday, meaning that more than 50mm (2 inches) of rain had fallen in an hour or was likely to fall generally over the city.
“Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad trough of low pressure are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea,” the forecaster said.
“Locally, showers this morning brought around 10mm of rainfall to the New Territories West and Lantau Island, and rainfall exceeded 20mm over the southern part of Lantau Island.”
According to the Observatory, a few squally thunderstorms are expected in the city, with intense gusts reaching 80km/h (50mph) or higher.
Education authorities said afternoon classes would be suspended under a red rainstorm warning, despite most schools being closed for summer break.
