The Hong Kong government has announced the cancellation of the technology minister’s scheduled business trip to the United States without explanation.
The government issued a one-sentence statement at 4.20pm on Tuesday, saying that Sun Dong, the secretary for innovation, technology and industry, had “cancelled his visit to the United States.”
Just hours earlier, at 12pm, it released a statement announcing Sun’s business trip to Las Vegas, to attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, and California, including Silicon Valley, from Tuesday to Sunday.
According to the earlier statement, Sun was set to attend the CES to “promote Hong Kong’s advantages as an international innovation and technology (I&T) centre,” leading the city’s largest-ever delegation of 61 enterprises to the trade show.
He was also scheduled to attend a tech networking event and a New Year’s reception in San Francisco, as well as visit local tech enterprises and a university in Silicon Valley.
The government gave no explanation as to why the business trip was suddenly cancelled.
HKFP has reached out to the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau for comment.
Sun is the first Hong Kong minister with a mainland Chinese background.
According to government statements, he has visited Korea, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and several mainland Chinese cities.
