Registered Nurse Health Educator Hilda Ramirez expresses the importance of being healthy
VICTORIA, Texas – The Texas A&M Coastal Bend Health Education Center is providing free A1C screenings for individuals with diabetes as part of an initiative to encourage healthier living and help prevent diabetes-related complications.
Registered Nurse Health Educator Hilda Ramirez, in partnership with Texas A&M AgriLife, developed a program focused on reducing diabetes through attention to the types of food people consume. Ramirez stresses that the intention isn’t to eliminate eating certain foods but to monitor dietary habits.
“We really want to focus on healthy eating, portion control, healthy eating and exercise,” Ramirez said.
She urges people to take advantage of the complimentary A1C screenings, noting that they can assist in making important diet adjustments.
“It’s best to maintain diabetes and not let it get any worse because the complications could be frightening,” Ramirez said. She also pointed out that diabetes is often an invisible condition, so it’s significant that people are beginning to acknowledge and accept their diagnosis. “Even if you learn the food that raise your blood sugar, that has a pretty good impact on the choices you eat.”
Bea Estrada, a local community member, spoke highly of the program, saying it taught her about plate portions and described the diabetes education classes as a “reset” for her body.
“I really enjoyed the class because of the information they give you. It gives you a mindset to remember to exercise, and I think the classes are great,” Estrada said.
Ramirez’s goal is to actively educate the public about the seriousness of diabetes and provide the knowledge needed to manage the condition effectively.
