Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have picked their favorite MCU costume. The brothers gave a surprising but exciting answer when asked what their favorite costume is out of all five of the Marvel films they’ve directed thus far.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the movie will be released in United States theaters later this year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, follows in 2027.
Thus far, Marvel has released four Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailers. The first teaser revealed that Chris Evans is officially returning to the MCU as Steve Rogers, while the second focused on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the third on a handful of X-Men characters. The fourth and final teaser put the spotlight on Letitia Wright’s Shuri/Black Panther, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm/The Thing, and more. A longer Avengers: Doomsday trailer was shown earlier this year at CinemaCon, though that footage has not been released online.
What is the Avengers: Doomsday directors’ favorite MCU costume?
Per Variety, the Russos said at SXSW London that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom costume is their favorite costume out of the Marvel films they’ve directed up until now.
“You’ll have to see,” Joe teased when asked why that was the case.
Anthony added, “It’s representative of the character in a way that the costume and the character really, really fit.”
Joe continued, “Part of our challenge has always been that there’s something that we love from the comics, and there’s something that you know other fans of the comics love; sometimes those things are the same thing, sometimes they’re different things. A lot of times, what our expression in the movie ends up being is what we love most about the comics, but then what is original to our storytelling, what is brand new — because we always look at it as our job to not tell you a story that you’ve heard before, we’re never translating directly from the comics, we’re always adding a new experience that hasn’t been written yet, in terms of who these characters can be.
“But I would say Doom hits that sweet spot between being very specific and unique to the original story that happens within this film, but also delivering on what the most awesome things are about Doom in the comics.”
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is then dated for December 17, 2027.
