Hong Kong risks losing its status as an international aviation hub if it fails to secure a reliable, credibly certified supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the head of the government’s think tank has warned.
Stephen Wong Yuen-shan, head of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit, made the remarks at the Sustainable Aviation Futures China Congress on Tuesday, days after the government set out its fuel strategy in the city’s first five-year plan and policy address amid mounting global competition.
“It is a question of whether Hong Kong can remain an international aviation hub as the economics and rules of global aviation change,” he said.
He added that future demand for SAF was increasingly being driven by policy rather than voluntary action, with the European Union and the United Kingdom introducing mandates and Singapore and Japan setting their own targets.
