Hong Kong police have arrested a 42-year-old man after he allegedly dumped laundry capsules into a pond, killing a catfish and injuring 30 turtles in Ma On Shan, the South China Morning Post has learned.
Police said on Saturday that officers were alerted on Wednesday by a security guard who found a large amount of foam in a pond at a residential estate on Kam Ying Road where turtles were kept.
The guard removed the turtles from the pond and cleaned it, the force said.
Officers arrested the man on Friday on suspicion of animal cruelty, according to police.
A source said the guard alerted police after finding the dead catfish and 30 injured turtles in the pond at the Kam Ying Court estate.
Officers examined surveillance footage and found that the suspect dumped laundry capsules into the pond at 4.57am on Wednesday before leaving the scene, according to the source.
