Hong Kong’s weather forecaster may issue a No 1 typhoon standby signal between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, warning that the city should brace for heavy rainstorms.
The Observatory said on Monday at 12.30pm that an area of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea would edge closer to the coast of Guangdong, with the associated cloud bands expected to take time to consolidate.
“Whether it will develop into a tropical depression will only become more certain when it is relatively close to the coast of Guangdong,” it said.
“If the area of low pressure develops into a tropical depression, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the standby signal, No 1, on [Monday] evening to tomorrow morning.”
The weather forecaster said the low-pressure system would be closest to Hong Kong on Tuesday morning and could skirt within 100km (62 miles) of the city.
The Observatory said it could issue a rainstorm signal, with heavy showers, thunderstorms and squalls expected on Tuesday, and flooding possible in some low-lying areas.
