Hong Kong’s privacy watchdog has ordered the removal of a viral dashcam video clip showing a heated argument inside a ride-hailing vehicle between a driver and a passenger, identified in the footage as singer David Lui Fong.
In response to queries from the South China Morning Post, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said on Friday that it had ordered a social media platform to remove the footage, while adding that no complaints had been received about the video yet.
Any video clearly identifying a specific person through a video camera system was deemed “personal data” under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the office noted.
Drivers could not upload footage of a passenger without the person’s explicit consent, it said.
The clip, which first circulated on the social media platform Threads, shows a dispute over an apparent GPS map mistake that quickly escalates into a shouting match filled with profanity and personal insults. It began circulating on social media on Thursday night.
In the video, the driver claims he has arrived at the address shown on his map, but the passenger insists it is incorrect.
The passenger asks the driver to move forward, but the driver refuses, saying he cannot stop ahead and needs to pick up his next customer.
