Excitement is building around Will Smith’s next high-stakes movie following a key casting update. The upcoming Amazon MGM Studios action thriller, Supermax, has officially locked in its female co-lead. While the film’s streaming release plan recently raised eyebrows, the addition of a new co-star has reignited the fan anticipation.
Who has joined the cast of Will Smith’s new action movie?
AnnaSophia Robb has officially locked in for Will Smith’s upcoming action thriller, Supermax. According to Deadline, Robb will play the film’s female co-lead opposite Smith, marking a major addition to the Amazon MGM Studios project.
Robb’s notable performances include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bridge to Terabithia, Soul Surfer, and The Carrie Diaries. Viewers will also see her star as Sylvester Stallone’s first wife, Sasha Czack, in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios biographical drama, I Play Rocky.
Supermax follows the story of two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith stars in the film as one of the lead investigators, Rex, while Robb joins him as the other FBI agent, raising the high-stakes action thriller. David Gordon Green is directing the film, while the screenplay duties are attached to David Weil and David J. Rosen, who previously worked on Hunters and Invasion.
The casting addition news comes after Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Supermax would bypass theatrical release and premiere exclusively on Prime Video. Skipping the theatrical release has surprised viewers given Will Smith’s star power and the film’s reported $70 million acquisition deal from Miramax. Many believe that the film should have a theatrical release instead, given Will Smith’s stellar box office collections worldwide.
Supermax will likely head into production later this year. In addition to his lead role, Smith will produce under his Westbrook banner alongside Adam Fishbach. Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona serve as producers for The Picture Company, with Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra, and Spencer Ela serving as executive producers.
Even though Supermax is releasing straight on a streaming platform, the addition of Robb raises the bar for the film’s investigative-driven story in a tight-security prison with the likes of Smith and Green.
