Alimi Ballard, who plays William Baines on General Hospital, opened up about returning to the soap after years away. He credited Laura Wright for helping him adjust to the show’s quick-moving environment. Baines arrived in Port Charles to look into the investigation of the disappearance of the corpse of WSB Chief Jack Brennan.
General Hospital’s Alimi Ballard on returning to soaps
In a conversation with TV Insider, Ballard said that it was a “mind trip” to return to daytime years after Loving and its spin-off, The City. He called General Hospital “legendary” before detailing the help he received from a fellow co-star in adjusting to the fast-paced soap opera environment.
He said, “The funniest conversations occurred with Laura and me. I’m like, ‘What is going on here, Laura?’ And she’s like, ‘Alimi, it’s faster. I told you this. It’s easy. Calm down.’ I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. You do 105 pages in one day?’ She said, ‘Yes, we do. Sometimes less, sometimes more.”
Moreover, he complimented EP Frank Valentini, Mark Teschner, and other cast and crew members for maintaining a warm and welcoming environment on set. He said this encourages actors to enjoy their work and give their best. He also compared it to the unhealthy environments he has experienced in the past, noting how much he values the difference at GH.
Moreover, he also requested that fans be patient with his character and not judge it in a few minutes before the real story unfolds. “Don’t judge him on those first couple of minutes. Grade him on a curve. He may surprise you,” he added.
Apart from his daytime role, he is also known for his performances in projects like CBS’ Numb3rs, Arsenio, Dark Angel, and The Catch. Before joining GH, he played Defense Attorney Ron Delahunt in three episodes of Law & Order.
