When Local Artists Turn Hong Kong Nostalgia Into Full Mecha Mode

From July to September, the Hong Kong Heavy Gear & Taste of Hong Kong Nostalgia Exhibition introduces a playful remix of local heritage. Local artist Felix Ip takes herbal tea shops, neon signboards, and old shopfront shutters, then rebuilds them as chunky sci-fi installations that feel closer to scenes straight out of a manga than to a museum hall.

One corner features a herbal tea urn reimagined as a copper robot. It has lion-dog details on its shoulders and bold characters stamped across its body. A drink that usually symbolizes health preservation and bitterness is now standing beside visitors in mecha form. People don’t just walk past it—they stop, pose, and take selfies. The moment looks like a casual couple photo, but the backdrop is pure Hong Kong nostalgia turned into hardware.

Another wall leans into the city’s most famous visual language: neon. Layered sign shapes and familiar Cantonese wording glow in loud blues, purples, and yellows. It reads like a condensed version of old-school Nathan Road, with street fonts set side by side, redesigned as an indoor light show.

The overall vibe is “Hong Kong, but make it a toy shelf.” The show leans into these creative mecha, giving families and friends a sense of play while still tapping into soft memories of iconic Hong Kong style.
