Is TikTok broken? Users have taken to social media to share their struggles with the app.
On Sunday, Jan. 25, the issues ranged from not being able to sign into their TikTok accounts and experiencing lagging to not being able to repost videos, or continuously getting videos they’ve already seen and noticing less curated feeds.
The outage began and peaked shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, with over 36,000 reports according to Downdetector.
However, many users are still experiencing disruptions. Here’s what we know.
Who owns TikTok now?
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company headquartered in Haidian, Beijing, finalized a deal Jan. 22, setting up the company as a joint venture that is majority American-owned, avoiding a U.S. ban of the app.
Per the agreement, American and global investors, including Trump-backed investors like Oracle and MGX, will hold a stake of 80.1 percent, while ByteDance retains 19.9 percent of the company.
Most TikTok outage reports stem from app function
Over 35,000 users reported issues with TikTok at 4:04 a.m. Jan. 25, according to DownDetector. The reported number on the site has since decreased to 4,689 users as of 2:42 p.m. Sunday, with some users still experiencing disruptions.
The most reported problem is the app itself with 65 percent, followed by total outages at 22 and 23 percent experiencing feed issues, according to DownDetector.
Is TikTok Help Center down?
The TikTok site also did not seem to be working for some users.
When trying to access the Help Center, this error message popped up — “Something went wrong. Try again later.”
When attempting to view the new terms of service at TikTok.com/legal, another error message came up — “An error occurred while processing your request.”
What are the new TikTok terms of service 2026?
TikTok introduced new terms and conditions Jan. 22 after ByteDance agreed to set up the company as majority American-owned joint venture.
“We’re updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (both as linked) effective January 22, 2026 to reflect changes including our updated corporate entity,” the TikTok website read. “By clicking below, you agree to these changes. If you are under 18, you also confirm that your parent or guardian has reviewed them with you and agreed to them.”
The links have since redirected to error for some users.
Some updated terms double down on the age restriction of users under 13 not being able to access the full version of the app, as well as expand the app’s ability to target advertising and track the location of people who give the app permission to do so, according to Newsweek and The New York Times.
“The revised privacy policy includes a statement that the new U.S. TikTok will share some data with TikTok’s global operations to ensure that users have an ‘interoperable experience,'” the NYT reported Friday, Jan. 23.
