Louis Leterrier has explained the origins of the creatures that appear in The Last House, revealing that they are ancient beings that lived in Earth’s oceans long before humans existed.
He said, “They’ve been there way before us. We are living on their planet.” According to the director, humanity’s excessive consumption and pollution eventually pushed the planet’s oceans to a critical point. As humans continued “boiling the oceans,” the creatures surfaced from the depths, bringing a new threat to the people trapped inside the house.
The creatures were deliberately created without a clear resemblance to any known marine species. Leterrier and production designer Kevin Jenkins wanted audiences to find them difficult to identify, giving them an appearance that would feel strange.
Jenkins said the creature’s final form came together almost by accident. “It accidentally came from the second drawing I sent to Louis. You can do a thousand pictures and go on forever. That came out after just two or three pictures,” he explained. The creatures have a distinct physical form, with their tentacles allowing them to move in a way that resembles two legs. Their movement was designed with an almost dance-like quality.
The Last House was directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Matthew Robinson. The film follows four family members who are suddenly unable to leave their home. As their resources become limited, they are forced to find a way to survive while the creatures remain outside. It was released on the streaming platform on August 7, 2026.
