Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen‘s underrated 2009 comedy movie will soon disappear from a major streaming service. This movie struggled at the box office when it originally came out, but did moderately well with critics.
Funny People is leaving Netflix next month
According to What’s on Netflix, Funny People will exit Netflix on September 16, 2025. Also leaving the platform on the same day are My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and multiple 30 for 30 projects.
Judd Apatow, who has worked with both Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen on multiple projects, wrote, directed, and co-produced Funny People. The plot revolves around Sandler’s George Simmons, a retired comedian who has found major success in movies. Following an acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis and major disillusionment with the movie business, Simmons sets out to trace back his roots in comedy. Rogen plays Ira Wright, an aspiring comedian whom Simmons hires as an assistant.
The movie’s stellar cast also includes Leslie Mann as Laura, Eric Bana as Clarke, and Jonah Hill as Leo Koenig. Funny People had its world premiere in Los Angeles, California, on July 20, 2009, before getting a wider release on July 31, 2009. It was a box-office disappointment. It earned $71 million globally against a production budget of $75 million (via Box Office Mojo).
However, as indicated above, the movie fared better with the professional critics. It currently has a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 233 reviews. Joshua Starnes of ComingSoon gave the movie a positive review, writing, “I love Funny People, and I find that it has gotten even better over time. While not the jovial laugh-a-second jaunt the trailers made many believe it would be, this thought-provoking, sometimes sad, and always fearlessly introspective drama is Judd Apatow’s best work yet.
Notably, Sandler’s Madison 23 Productions (a short-lived subsidiary of Happy Madison Productions) developed Funny People as its final movie. The only other movie that the company produced was Reign Over Me.
