Fans hoping for a Warrior Nun revival might have some promising news, as its creator Simon Barry plans a bold new direction for the franchise. Netflix canceled Barry’s fantasy show after two seasons in 2022. The following year, its producers announced a movie trilogy, though it never reached the big screen.
According to Deadline, Barry and his Vancouver-based Reality Distortion Field are now in final talks to acquire key underlying rights to the original comic book series. He is negotiating with Perfect Circle Productions, which holds the live-action rights to Ben Dunn’s manga-style comics, published by Antarctic Press. Titled Warrior Nun Areala, the comics span more than 100 issues and specials.

Rather than doing a direct revival, Simon Barry wants to build a shared cinematic universe through TV and film. He plans to draw elements from the source material that went unexplored in the original Netflix series.
The movie trilogy rights had been tied up with Productivity Media Inc., but that deal stalled after the company’s CEO, William Santor, died, with reports that the company was being investigated for mismanaging funds. Barry later said the company had “done nothing” with the rights and questioned whether it still existed. With that deal now seemingly expired, Barry is pursuing this new effort himself.
The original Warrior Nun series ran for two seasons before Netflix pulled the plug. The show starred Alba Baptista as Ava Silva, alongside Kristina Tonteri-Young and Lorena Andrea. It followed Ava, an orphan who learns she has supernatural abilities after becoming the chosen Halo Bearer for a secret order of demon-hunting nuns. Co-founded by Barry, RDF produced this series.
Barry’s team plans to pitch the project to potential partners at TIFF: The Market this week. If the deal goes through, Warrior Nun could finally see daylight again in a new form.
