Ambassador Gor arrived in Imphal and visited the historic Kangla as well as Khwairamband Ima Keithel, the iconic women’s market
United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, during his visit to Manipur on Friday, described the state as a “stunning place” blessed with “stunning beauty” and underlined the importance of continued U.S.-India engagement.
Ambassador Gor arrived in Imphal and visited the historic Kangla as well as Khwairamband Ima Keithel, the iconic women’s market at the heart of the state capital.
During his visit, Gor met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
Following his meeting with the Governor, the US Ambassador said on X that he appreciated the opportunity to meet Bhalla and that the two discussed the importance of continued U.S.-India engagement.
At his meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the CM Secretariat in Mantripukhri, Gor praised Manipur’s natural beauty and said he was pleased that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was focusing on the development of Northeast India.
The Ambassador also enquired about tourist arrivals in Manipur and discussed the potential for tourism and other sectors to contribute to the state’s development.
Gor highlighted the close relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, describing it as a bond that goes beyond the normal relationship between a Prime Minister and a President.
Chief Minister Khemchand, meanwhile, invited the US Ambassador to attend the Manipur Sangai Festival 2026. He described India as a “mini world” and Manipur as a “mini India”, noting that the state is home to 36 communities.
The Chief Minister also highlighted tourism and allied sectors as areas with significant potential for development.
Ambassador Gor was accompanied by US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz. Following his engagements in Imphal, he proceeded to Loktak Lake in Moirang, Bishnupur district, where he is scheduled to stay overnight.
