The U.S. Department of State has been actively updating its travel advisories for popular destinations. Recently, they have been going beyond safety cautions—highlighting local laws, such as exit bans and detainment in a growing tourist spot. In a more recent warning, the State Department alerted Americans to entry refusals in their most visited European destination.
This comes months after the country began strict enforcement of an already existing entry requirement, which many U.S. travelers are still unaware of. Some even learned it the hard way this year, with airlines denying them boarding right before departure.
U.S. Travelers Warned Of Denied Entry To U.K. Over ETA Rule
On Wednesday, September 9, the State Department updated its travel advisory for the U.K. While the U.S. maintains its standard Level 2 warning for the country due to threats against American interests, a deeper scroll shows a stern warning about the U.K. Home Office’s strict Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) rules for U.S. travelers: “no permission, no travel.”
The U.S. travel advisory notes in its entry guidelines for the U.K. that “if denied entry, we cannot press for your admission into the U.K.” ETAs are required for visa-exempt foreign nationals, including American citizens, transiting through or traveling to the U.K. for tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study of up to six months.

Initially rolled out for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries like Qatar in 2023, the U.K. ETA eventually expanded to other Gulf States in 2024 and to the U.S., Canada, Australia, and nearly all European nations in 2025.
In February this year, the grace period for the enforcement concluded, leading to mandatory boarding checks by airlines, ferries, and international trains—meaning travelers can be denied right then and there.
Americans Face Various U.K. ETA Challenges
During the summer, American travelers faced a mix of issues with the U.K. ETA requirement. First, some seasoned travelers still had no idea about the rule at that point, leading to costly boarding refusals at the airport. Even those who had applied for an ETA had trouble following widespread app outages and technical glitches in early June.
However, these mainly affected those who submitted their applications at the last minute, assuming instant approval. Some ended up missing their flights as they had failed to secure approval on time, so it’s best to apply at least three working days before your trip.
Additionally, since the rule was implemented, many applicants have mistakenly used third-party scam websites that charge exorbitant fees beyond the £20 rate and never actually submit their applications.
How U.S. Travelers Can Get A U.K. ETA
The easiest and safest way to apply for a U.K. ETA is through the official U.K. ETA mobile app, which is available on both Google Play and App Store. However, travelers who are unable to install the app on their phones can still apply online via the official government website.
Applicants must have their valid passport ready (with a biometric chip if using the app), a credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay for the fee, an active email address for updates, a digital photo for online applications, and a smartphone camera to take a live photo.

After securing the ETA, applicants must keep in mind that maintaining its validity still requires careful attention to travel documents, such as what happens when the passport with the linked ETA is renewed.
“One of the most common mistakes people make is forgetting that the ETA is linked to the specific passport used during the application,” Helena Sheizon, Director and immigration lawyer at Kadmos Immigration, told TheTravel. “If you renew your passport, your existing ETA does not transfer across and you will need to apply for a new one.”
Aside from ETAs, the State Department stresses that Americans must review all entry and visa requirements for their visit or stay in the U.K., especially those who are dual citizens (holding U.K. or Irish citizenship). Dual citizens are required to enter the U.K. on their valid U.K. passport (no ETA needed) and cannot obtain an ETA on a foreign passport.
The ETA is part of the U.K.’s Nationality and Borders Act 2022, which aims to modernize border control, enhance security, and easily identify those abusing visitor rules. It has a notable impact on U.S. travelers, who represent the single largest group of international visitors to the U.K.

The U.K. is still Americans’ most visited European destination, mainly due to shared language, direct flight access, and cultural familiarity. In 2024, the U.K. welcomed a record 5.6 million U.S. travelers, spending a total of £7.3 billion ($9.8 billion), with an average spend of £1,301 ($1,760) per visit.
London is the leading destination for American visitors to the U.K., taking up 48% of visitor nights.
Latest 2026 data from VisitBritain also predicts 5.5 million visitors from the U.S. this year, a 4% increase from 2025, as well as an estimated £7.5 billion ($10.2 billion) in visitor spending.
This comes as airlines boost transatlantic flight availability, such as United Airlines relaunching its daily seasonal nonstop service between Glasgow (GLA) and its Newark/New York (EWR) hub after a seven-year absence due to high demand.
