Azzedine Ounahi scored a brace and Yassine Bounou made three saves to help send Morocco to the quarterfinals with a shutout victory over Canada.

The two teams played through a tense first half which featured six yellow cards and just five total shots.

According to OptaJack, that’s the first time since at least 1966 the first half of a World Cup match has involved more bookings than shots.

Morocco opened scoring early in the second half after the game’s seventh yellow card went to Canada’s Luc de Fougerolles.

Achraf Hakimi sent the free kick to Ounahi, who scored the opening goal of the match into the bottom right corner of Canada’s net.

Bounou made a diving save to keep out a shot from Canada’s Tajon Buchanan and maintain Morocco’s lead late in the second half.

Minutes later, Ounahi extended Morocco’s advantage with his second goal of the match.

Ounahi almost assisted on Morocco’s third goal of the game late in regulation, but Soufiane Rahimi’s attempt bounced off Canada’s crossbar.

Rahimi converted on his next attempt late in stoppage time to close out Morocco’s win.

Canada is the first of the three host nations to go home, while Morocco will advance to take on either France or Paraguay in the quarterfinals.
