MARYLAND (WBFF) — President Donald Trump on Thursday announced his latest attempt at lowering energy costs in Maryland: investing millions to revive a coal-burning power plant that closed in 2024.
According to the White House, the Department of Energy (DOE) will provide $200 million in grants, some of which will go toward restarting the AES Warrior Run Limited Partnership coal plant in Cumberland. In a statement celebrating the move, Maryland Republicans said $85 million would go towards AES Warrior.
The president claimed that the effort will reduce electricity costs by $50 billion while creating over 14,000 jobs. According to the White House, Warrior Run will match its DOE funds to reopen its facility.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s administration criticized Trump’s efforts as outdated and harmful to the environment.
