US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States and Canada have reached a trade deal following a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, though he emphasized that the agreement remains contingent upon the completion of final documentation.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump confirmed the breakthrough came after Tuesday’s discussions with Carney. “We had a very good conversation with the prime minister last night, and we’ve come to a deal with Canada,” he said, characterizing the outcome as “a very good deal for both” nations. The president stressed that the arrangement would eliminate duties on US farm products shipped north. “Our farmers were paying tremendous tariffs into Canada, and those tariffs are going to be totally eviscerated down to zero,” Trump added.
Tariff suspension
The announcement followed Trump’s decision on Tuesday to pause a planned 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods that had been scheduled to take effect Wednesday, allowing a three-day window for negotiators to finalize terms. Asked whether Washington would reduce tariffs on Canadian automobiles and luxury goods, the president indicated concessions would be made, stating: “We’re doing certain things. We’re giving, going to give something.” Carney had been working to avert levies on approximately C$30 billion ($22 billion) worth of Canadian exports.
