Getting your usual Dunkin’ order might be good for your workday hit of caffeine.
However, when you really want to enjoy a well-made cup of coffee by yourself or with someone else, you may want to visit one of Vermont’s small coffee shops.
Luckily, Chowhound made a list of the best coffee shops in each state and said one café in Burlington has the best coffee in Vermont.
“We used criteria like awards, press, and social media to find shops that not only serve great coffee, but also contribute something distinctive to their local scene, whether that’s roasting excellence, innovative drink craft, community atmosphere, or a strong ethical mission,” Chowhound said.

Onyx Tonics Specialty Coffee — Burlington, Vermont
Onyx Tonics Specialty Coffee was named by Chowhound as the best coffee house in all of Vermont because its online acclaim and their unique approach to their menu.
“The simple, minimalist coffee shop focuses on pulling the unique flavors from each bean, and offers a rotating selection of single-origin coffees each week,” Chowhound said.
One Reddit on the Chowhound entry said that the baristas are supremely talented, comparing them to wizards, another said that they’d bet their life on an Onyx espresso shot.
Onyx Tonics Specialty Coffee was first established in 2016, and the two people behind the coffee shop are Jason Gonzalez and Tiffany Farrant-Gonzalez, a coffee fanatic who grew up in Essex Junction and a graphic designer from England, serving coffee to the Burlington community, according to their website.
“Each week we feature 6+ different single origin coffees from a selection of great local and U.S. based roasters,” the Onyx Tonics website said. “We use milk from Rogers Farmstead in Berlin, VT.”
