The Rookie Season 8 Finale Ending Leaves Major Character’s Future in Question

The Rookie’s Season 8 finale left one original cast member’s future at a crossroads, sparking speculation about a potential departure ahead of Season 9. Showrunner Alexi Hawley addressed the character’s uncertain path forward and confirmed whether the show plans to shake up its roster.

Is Richard T. Jones’ Wade Grey leaving The Rookie after Season 8?

Richard T. Jones will return as Wade Grey in The Rookie Season 9. Showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed to Deadline that no series regulars will depart the show ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Grey spent Season 8 working on Garza’s task force while Tim Bradford took over as Watch Commander. The task force centred on villain Monica Stevens, whom an assassin killed in the penultimate episode. As a result, Grey now faces an uncertain professional future.

When asked about Grey’s next chapter, Hawley told Deadline the writers room will tackle it early. “I do think part of early writers room for Season 9 is going to be figuring out exactly what Grey’s next chapter is,” he said. Additionally, Hawley wants the storyline to represent forward momentum for the character.

“I am always looking for a fresh way, I don’t think going backwards is necessarily the way to go, but I also want it to be satisfying and dramatic,” Hawley said. He added, “As long as we treat it as an opportunity, I think we’ll figure out something fun to do, for sure.”

Hawley firmly shut down any speculation about Jones leaving the series. “No, we’re status quo. We like everybody, we’re making it work,” he said. He called Jones “a hugely important piece of the puzzle of our show.” The Season 8 finale ended on a cliffhanger after Tim proposed to Lucy Chen. She accepted, but unknown assailants abducted them both immediately afterward. Grey had offered to cover Tim’s post during wedding preparations.

Hawley also addressed whether The Rookie might ever kill off a main character. “I don’t think so,” he said, adding, “There’s no plan to do anything crazy right now, but never say never.”

ABC renewed the series for Season 9, likely premiering January 2027.
