The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to release in theaters this week. Ahead of the new Star Wars movie’s premiere, here’s what’s best known before diving in.
The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue the story from the hit Disney+ series on the big screen. The movie sees Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian, and also stars Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Johnny Coyne, among others. Jon Favreau will be producing the movie in addition to directing, while Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni will also be producing the film.
“The evil Empire has fallen, but Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
What should The Mandalorian and Grogu audiences know about the movie beforehand?
Ahead of the film’s release this week, it’s important to note a few major things for the upcoming movie. The first being, of course, that the movie continues the overarching story of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Although director Jon Favreau has said the movie won’t feature too many plot lines from the show, for those who might not be up to date with information on the series, you might want to check out the show on Disney+, or at least try and find some sort of video explaining the series to catch you up with the movie.
With that out of the way, the other biggest thing to note about the movie is that it likely will largely be disconnected from the overall Star Wars lore that already exists. While the show has had some strong connections to the world of Star Wars, including appearances by Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, the movie likely won’t.
Original plans for the fourth season of The Mandalorian would’ve been more focused on the world of Star Wars, Favreau told SFX Magazine earlier this year, but with the pivot to a movie, a lot of that was scrapped to embrace a whole new story.
As a result of changes like this, it seems like The Mandalorian and Grogu will largely be its own, self-contained story to enjoy. Fans of the main Star Wars lore might not find a lot to dive into here, but the movie does look like it’s shaping up to be a fun adventure film, albeit maybe skewing a little more towards being for the children’s demographic of Star Wars fans versus some of the more adult members of the fanbase.
