Eric Kripke confirms Soldier Boy is not in The Boys Season 5 finale
The Boys creator Eric Kripke confirmed Soldier Boy’s story ends in Season 5, Episode 7. In an interview with Collider, Kripke revealed Jensen Ackles filmed his final scene in that episode. The showrunner also explained why Homelander chose that specific moment to act against his father.
Kripke described Homelander’s decision as rooted in deep abandonment issues. “He just couldn’t let his dad leave again or be without his father again,” Kripke said. The creator added that Homelander’s trauma connects directly to both his father and his son Ryan. “His son abandoned him, and I just don’t think he could handle being abandoned by his father,” he explained.
The showrunner confirmed Homelander wanted permanent control over Soldier Boy’s presence. “Now, Soldier Boy is there forever. His father will always be there, sleeping and won’t talk back,” Kripke said. He described this outcome as “a big win for Homelander” in the character’s twisted worldview.
Kripke also revealed the production team snuck in one last Supernatural reference during Soldier Boy’s final scene. Ackles originally delivered a line referencing “the old Ford” in the script. However, Kripke and director Phil Sgriccia changed it during post-production editing sessions together. “Phil was like, ‘Should it be Impala?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, it probably should be Impala,’” Kripke recalled. Ackles then looped the new word to create one final nod to his previous iconic role.
Meanwhile, Kripke teased that the series finale will focus heavily on emotional storytelling. “People don’t always seem to feel this way, but to me, the show has always had a lot of heart and hope,” he said. He promised big fights and confrontations alongside genuine, honest emotion in the show’s final episode.
