Spider-Man: Brand New Day brings Punisher and Hulk into Peter Parker’s world. Director Destin Daniel Cretton insists these aren’t simple cameos designed to sell tickets.
The filmmaker revealed that both characters serve as mirrors, reflecting the emotional crossroads facing Tom Holland’s wall-crawler after the devastating events of No Way Home. Peter Parker stands at a precipice, and these two very different Marvel icons represent the paths stretching before him.

Speaking with Nerdtropolis, Cretton addressed the thematic weight behind the casting choices. The director, known for Shang-Chi and Wonder Man, explained that every character inclusion stems from story necessity rather than spectacle.
“Both the Punisher and Bruce Banner and the Hulk reflect the theme of this movie and the journey that Peter Parker is on,” Cretton stated. He characterized Frank Castle as something deeply troubling for the young hero. “Peter Parker sees the Punisher as a potential warning sign of where he could go if he allowed himself to continue down the path that he’s on.”
The Hulk offers a different kind of reflection. While Cretton promised “one of the coolest action sequences of our movie” featuring the Jade Giant, he suggested Banner’s dual nature resonates on a more personal level. “You’ll also be surprised at the intimacy of it and the reflection that the Hulk has for the journey that Peter is on,” he added.
Jon Bernthal, returning as the Punisher, elaborated on this dynamic. “We’re dealing with a dark version of Spider-Man, where he’s closing himself off and trying to figure out who he is,” the actor explained to Den of Geek. Castle apparently recognizes a kindred spirit heading toward dangerous territory. “Frank doesn’t buy into all this stuff. He’s a level guy and he gets frustrated with all this superhero stuff. But there’s a sense of mutual respect with Spider-Man.”
The film picks up four years after No Way Home, with Peter, MJ, and Ned finishing college. Tom Holland described the first half as “a really good example of someone handling his problems poorly,” while Zendaya called this version of Peter “more vulnerable and intense than we’ve seen before.”
It is releasing later this month, on July 31.
