This visit follows a thaw in relations after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to India, which produced agreements on restoring border trade, reopening direct flights, and ensuring peace along the frontier. These measures are part of a broader attempt to reset ties, which suffered after the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.
Apart from Xi, PM Modi is expected to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders at the SCO, making this visit an important test of India’s strategic balancing between major powers.
