Dark Horse Comics officially announced Masters of the Universe: Genesis, a new comic series focused on the early days of Eternia’s most iconic figures. The story begins with a strong spotlight on Skeletor, exploring how he rose to become one of the franchise’s most dangerous threats. The first issue is set to release on August 5 and kicks off a three-part arc centered on his origins.
The opening storyline follows Skeletor as a “power-hungry demon-mage” determined to control Castle Grayskull and rule Eternia. Writer Rich Douek leads the project, with art by Gavin Smith and colors by Fabi Marques. The comic promises to break down the beginnings of both heroes and villains, giving fans a clearer look at how this universe took shape long before its major battles.
While the first arc focuses on Skeletor, future issues might expand the spotlight to other major characters. Dark Horse confirmed that multiple creative teams, including names like Cavan Scott and Tiffany Smith, will step in for upcoming stories. This hints at a broader plan to explore different corners of Eternia rather than sticking to one narrative thread.
The timing of this release is no coincidence. The comic arrives just ahead of the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film, which stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, alongside Idris Elba and Jared Leto. That film is expected to bring the franchise back into the mainstream, and this comic series helps build extra depth around its characters and lore.
Alongside Genesis, another tie-in comic titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate is also on the way. It will follow the film’s events and expand the story further.
