NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WAVE) – New Albany-Floyd County Schools (NAFCS) is reminding families about updated expectations for student cell phone use during the school day, in line with Indiana’s new wireless device law. The new ‘bell-to-bell’ law requires students to leave their phones at home or tuck them away in a bag or locker.
According to the district, students may still bring phones to school, but devices must be turned off and stored in a backpack or purse — not kept on a student’s person.
The district says devices also may not be used during lunch, recess, passing periods, or instructional time unless an exception applies.
“It’s crossing that threshold of going beyond which we’ve done in the past, and I think it’s setting the standard of what might be happening around the country,” Gov. Braun said about the new law in May.
NAFCS says exceptions are limited and may include medical needs, IEP or Section 504 accommodations, language translation, or other exceptions allowed by law. Families are encouraged to review the district’s flyer with students before school begins.
