In May 2026, Flathub maintainer Bart Piotrowski announced that the platform would no longer accept apps that used AI-generated code. People speculated that it might do more harm than good, but as one person has discovered, vibe-coded apps tend to be abandoned or deleted far more often than human-made ones.

This study was performed by Linux developer Evangelos Paterakis. They were curious to see how well AI-generated apps were faring months after their release. To do this, they did a search through the repos, looking for any that had been given the “AI Slop” tag. Reviewers created this tag to flag an app that clearly used AI in either the code, the application process, or both.
Once Paterakis had a collection of “AI Slop” apps, they then got to work looking at how many of them had been abandoned:
To judge whether a repo was “maintained” I only included PRs made before 2026-04-01 and marked them as unmaintained if there was no activity in the last 2-3 months, while ignoring trivial commits such as README changes or dependabot.
Paterakis does admit that this isn’t a perfect way to spot abandoned projects; after all, some apps may simply be done, and some may be on a small hiatus. However, they did expect an app that had been released only months before to at least have some activity on it.
So, what did they find? Well, out of the 120 unique repos they found with the “AI Slop” label, 32 were still being maintained. That leaves 88 of them (a staggering 73%) abandoned. Of those abandoned apps, “a big portion” had been flat-out deleted, while others hadn’t received a single update since arriving on Flathub.
While Paterakis doesn’t want to claim that every single vibe-coded app will be abandoned within months, it’s hard not to recognise that only 27% of them are continuing to be maintained. At any rate, it shows that the ban on AI-generated apps and applications was worth it, if only to save reviewers from fighting with an agent over software that becomes abandonware the moment it hits Flathub.
