Morgantown man creates ‘DrunkProof’ app

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Whether you’ve ever sent or received a drunk text or phone call, the typical repercussions are usually embarrassing at best, but one Morgantown man has created an app to help avoid those situations entirely.

“DrunkProof” is an app that locks selected apps and contacts until the morning after to avoid any drunk texts or phone calls you might make to that one person you’re still not entirely over.

Matthew Jones is the creator of Drunkproof, and admitted to 12 News in an interview that the app was inspired by his own mistakes.

“I’ve always noticed that most people, and myself, always regrettably send that text or make that phone call when you’re drinking and having a good time, and it really just came from personal experience, and i started thinking about it and I was like, ‘you know what, maybe we can make something that might help us prevent some of these regrettable incidences,’” Jones said.

The DrunkProof app has a basic and premium version, with the premium version housing a feature called “Nightwatch” that would allow the designated driver or guardian to share a code with friends that tracks their phone’s live locations.

Jones said that he hopes to include additional safety features in conjunction with rideshare apps as the app develops over time.

“It’s very easy to say, you know, don’t drink too much, don’t get out of control, but when you’re in that bar, or you’re in that party, and you’re having a good time, it’s very easy to lose self-control. But it’s mostly for those people that understand, that have been through those regrettable situations before,” Jones said.

Jones is also in the process of developing a personal angler app called “Claim the Lake” that will allow users to track live catches, weights, as well as create tournaments and view in-depth maps of bodies of water.

DrunkProof is expected to be launched on app stores by the end of next week. You can keep up with the app through Jones’ website and TikTok.
