Modcup Opening New Roastery + Cafe In Downtown Jersey City

news

Modcup started as a coffee cart in Jersey City, selling fresh cups of coffee to locals Downtown. Since then, the coffee company has grown to three locations, and now plans to open a fourth. Modcup recently signed a lease agreement at 420 Marin Boulevard, right near the Shop Rite in Jersey City, with plans to build a huge coffee roastery and cafe. Here’s what we know about the plans to open a Modcup roastery + cafe in downtown Jersey City.

About ModCup

The specialty coffee company started its business small, serving coffee from a cart in Hoboken back in 2013. They opened their first brick-and-mortar store in the Heights at 479 Palisade Avenue in 2014. Their next adventure was opening their own roastery and cafe in Journal Square in 2016. The 2,000 square foot space allowed the Modcup team to roast more beans and serve more customers in a new neighborhood. Then in 2024, Modcup opened its Hoboken location at 211 4th Street.

The owner previously told The Hoboken Girl the team selects the flavorful coffee beans by visiting farms across the world, including Colombia, Bali, Ethiopia, and Guatemala, to handpick and inspect them. Then the beans are shipped to the roastery in Jersey City where they undergo a delicate roasting process to ensure maximum full-bodied flavor. Finally, an 18-day sell-by date is established after roasting to guarantee freshness and quality.

The New Roastery + Cafe

Modcup’s new roastery and cafe will take up 1,843 square feet in the building currently under construction at 420 Marin Boulevard. The 1.3 million-square-foot mixed-use building will also include 802 rental apartments, 115,000 square feet of retail space, and a brand new ShopRite to replace the one across the street, per Jersey Digs.

“The new location will be anchored by a 35-kg Loring Coffee Roaster and will give us the ability to compete with the world’s best roasters while staying deeply rooted in Jersey City, the place that shaped us,” the owner, Travas Clifton, told Jersey Digs. “This is about building world-class infrastructure without losing the soul, values, or community that got us here.”

Modcup currently roasts coffee beans in Journal Square at 25 Senate Place. The Downtown location will allow the coffee crew to expand their roasting operations and grow their brand. No word yet on when the new coffee roastery and cafe will open in downtown Jersey City.
