Minions & Monsters breaks a franchise record but not in a good way. This may not be as bad as it sounds since the movie received a good Rotten Tomatoes score.
What franchise record did Minions & Monsters break?
Minions & Monsters hit theaters on July 1, 2026, and on its opening day at the box office, it earned $14.2 million domestically. This marked the franchise’s lowest earnings on its opening day. The third instalment of the Minions movies and the seventh instalment of the franchise earned around $30.7 million worldwide.
This record was previously held by Despicable Me 4, with a global gross of approximately $56.4 million on its opening day. The highest-grossing movie in the franchise is Minions, which earned $115.7 million on the opening weekend and $1.16 billion globally at the end of its theatrical run. Second to this is Despicable Me 3, which earned a total of $1.03 billion worldwide.
The new movie earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% and also received an A- on CinemaScore, which could lead the total gross to go much higher at the end of its theatrical run.

Additionally, the movie is yet to see its global opening weekend, with the 4th of July falling on a Saturday, so there is still more room for these numbers to grow, as per Deadline. The tracking predictions for Minions & Monsters are between $60 and $90 million.
The movie was directed by Pierre Coffin, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Lynch. It was produced by Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan. The movie picks up when the yellow, overall-wearing creatures arrive in 1920s Hollywood to find an evil master to serve. Since they get a taste of fame, they decide to make their own monster movie. Using a curse book, they accidentally unleash the beasts into the world, which they must save from the same monsters they unleashed.
The cast members include Coffin, Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarrCoffin.
