BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Artists of all kinds had their tents set up at the annual Brockport Arts Festival this weekend.
Have you heard of “upcycling?” One artist uses the method to support her mission against fast fashion. News10NBC photojournalist Tim Pratt caught up with her at the festival and got a peek at some of her newest pieces.
Instead of throwing out old clothes or fabrics, owner of “clothing re born,” Charlotte Besaw, makes all of her pieces using upcycling.
“It’s all made from things that have lived a previous life,” she said. “I will buy things that have holes in them or stains, but I can cover it up with a patch or… something else! And it’s a great feeling.”
She’s been using the method since 2007. One of her newest pieces is a white maxi skirt. Besaw said she made it with sheets.
Concern for the environment is what got her started.
“I was really concerned about the waste,” she said. “There is so much waste, and I really don’t think it’s about like, the climate change aspect, but we do have a serious pollution problem.”
Besaw said there are enough clothes on Earth right now to clothe the next six to seven generations.
