US President Donald Trump has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington, DC, for a three-day visit and high-stakes talks on trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence.
Xi arrived at Joint Base Andrews outside the US capital on Wednesday, as the Trump administration announced that the two countries had agreed to extend an 11-month trade deal that had provided temporary relief from punitive tariffs, according to Al Jazeera.
Trump took the rare step of personally greeting Xi upon his arrival, marking the first time in 11 years that a US president has welcomed a foreign leader at the base, according to US media.
During the arrival ceremony, the two leaders and their wives shook hands, spoke for several minutes and posed for photographs as a military band played, cannons fired and a B-1 military bomber flew overhead.
In a written statement afterward, Xi said China and the US should be partners rather than rivals.
“He said that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand, complement each other and benefit the world,” Xinhua reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday voiced confidence that China and the United States, as two major countries, can find a right way to get along in the new era, Xinhua reported.
This year is a crucial year for the respective development of China and the United States, Xi said in a written speech upon his arrival for a U.S. state visit.
Xi noted that he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability during Trump’s visit to China in May, which has provided strategic guidance for the future development of bilateral ties.
China and the United States should work in the same direction, promote a stable relationship featuring cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences, and promises of peace, Xi said.

During the welcome, which included a red carpet, two B-1 bombers flew overhead to celebrate Xi’s arrival.
The supersonic aircraft are a key part of the US’s combat arsenal, and produce a notoriously loud roar when they pass by.
