Prime Video has released the official trailer for its upcoming romantic comedy film, The Love Hypothesis. Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the new footage teases a fake-relationship premise reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock’s 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal.
The upcoming rom-com adapts Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, which became a viral hit after its 2021 release.
Claire Scanlon directs the film from a script by Sarah Rothschild, while Elizabeth Cantillon produces under her Cantillon Company banner for Amazon MGM Studios and MRC. Laura Karpman composed the score for the film, who earlier worked with Scanlon on 2018’s Set It Up.

Lili Reinhart & Tom Bateman navigate a fake romance in The Love Hypothesis
The Love Hypothesis follows Olive, played by Reinhart, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate dedicated entirely to her academic career. Olive discovers that her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her former crush, Jeremy, played by Nicholas Duvernay.
To make Ahn believe that she has moved on, Olive acts on impulse and kisses an intimidating biology professor, Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman. That unexpected moment leads to a fake relationship between the two individuals.
They both agree to pretend they are in a relationship, establishing boundaries, rules, and benefits for both of them. “I accept your proposal to deceive your friend into believing that I’m your love interest,” Adam states in the trailer. “Sounds really bad when you put it like that,” Olive responds.
However, things take a different turn when they move on for a while, and they create genuine feelings for each other. Their agreed relationship becomes increasingly difficult to fake, leaving Olive to test her hardest hypothesis yet: whether love is actually worth the risk.
Apart from Reinhart and Bateman, the film also features Jaboukie Young-White, Arty Froushan, Laura Paolillo, Jeananne Goossen, and many more.
The Love Hypothesis premieres on September 23, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video.
