Gasgoo Munich- Leapmotor put the A05 battery-electric hatchbackonto the market on August 11, pricing the five-variant lineup between 63,900 yuan and 90,900 yuan.

The A05 is the second vehicle developed on Leapmotor’s global-oriented A platform after the A10 SUV. Its combination of sub-100,000-yuan pricing, long-range options and available LiDAR-based driver assistance places it in an increasingly competitive segment of China’s entry-level electric vehicle market.

The A-series is intended to address the mass market in China and overseas, using a common technical base to support different body styles. While the A10 takes the form of a compact SUV, the smaller A05 is aimed primarily at younger first-time buyers and urban commuters who value maneuverability and lower operating costs.
Leapmotor has structured the A05 around four themes—design, drivability, digital features and safety—emphasizing equipment that can be used regularly rather than positioning the model solely through headline specifications.

Measuring 4,200 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,560 mm tall, with a 2,605-mm wheelbase, the A05 uses a five-door, five-seat A0-segment hatchback body.
Its styling follows Leapmotor’s latest A-series design language, combining short overhangs with a floating-roof treatment and a broad rear profile. Three-section light signatures at the front and rear create the brand’s “smiling” visual motif, while 16-inch wheels and functional front air channels add a sportier element without compromising the car’s compact proportions.
Six exterior colors are available, including Morgan Pink, Rime Beige and Seaweed Green, with the palette drawing on colors found in natural landscapes.

Leapmotor also collaborated with Matteo Menotto, chief design consultant to Bulgari, on a bespoke crosshatch pattern inspired by traditional woven textures. The motif appears in exterior graphics and selected cabin details.
The interior is offered in three themes, including Peach Pink and Oat Gray. Leapmotor says soft-touch materials cover 2.6 square meters of the cabin, an area where many vehicles at this price point rely heavily on hard plastics.
The lineup is topped by the A05s special edition, which pairs a pink-and-black two-tone exterior with 17-inch iridescent two-tone wheels. Its interior introduces suede-like materials and music-inspired design details, providing a more distinctive alternative to the standard versions.
Customers can choose between CLTC-rated ranges of 405 km and 510 km. The two configurations use 39.8-kWh and 53-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs, respectively.
The larger battery supports 2.5C fast charging, with Leapmotor quoting a 30%-to-80% charging time of 16 minutes. Energy consumption is rated as low as 10.6 kWh per 100 km, although actual range and charging performance will vary with temperature, driving conditions and charger output.
A seven-in-one oil-cooled electric drive unit gives the A05 a top speed of 160 km/h. The powertrain is designed to sustain cruising speeds of up to 150 km/h, extending its intended use beyond low-speed urban journeys.

A minimum turning radius of 4.9 meters is intended to make the A05 easier to maneuver on narrow streets and in older residential areas. Leapmotor‘s integrated motion-control system works with a ZF braking system to provide lighter steering and predictable low-speed responses.
Available parking functions include automated parking, memory parking and smartphone-controlled remote parking. The vehicle can also retrace a previously driven route in reverse for up to 120 meters, helping the driver exit confined roads or dead ends.
Higher-spec versions introduce a roof-mounted LiDAR and Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride 8650 computing platform. The hardware supports functions including navigation-assisted driving from one parking space to another, along with more advanced automated-parking capabilities.
The LiDAR-based suite is limited to selected upper trims. Lower-priced versions provide a more conventional Level 2 driver-assistance package, making the distinction between variants more substantial than their shared exterior design might suggest.
All of these functions remain driver-assistance features. The driver must continue monitoring the road and remains responsible for controlling the vehicle.
The digital cockpit combines a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor with a 14.6-inch, 2.5K central display. Leapmotor OS integrates Alibaba‘s Qwen large language model, enabling dialect recognition, child-oriented conversations and voice control of functions visible on the screen.
Depending on the trim, the infotainment package also includes a 12-speaker, 7.1-channel audio system and a microphone-free karaoke function. These features give the A05 a richer cabin experience than is typically expected from an entry-level urban EV.
The A05 reflects a broader shift in China‘s sub-100,000-yuan EV market. Competition is moving beyond basic affordability toward longer usable range, faster charging, easier parking and more capable digital systems.
Leapmotor‘s strategy is to concentrate spending on functions that owners are likely to use frequently while offering more expensive driver-assistance hardware only on selected trims. That approach gives budget-conscious first-time buyers and urban commuters a wider choice, although the value proposition varies considerably depending on the selected configuration.
